Halcyon issues new release of Disk Space Manager

Date Posted: 22/06/06

Systems management software provider, Halcyon Software, has announced Disk Space Manager 4.0 – which now includes an intuitive, graphical user interface to enable quick and easy analysis of disk space resources and the capability to manage independent ASPs for IBM System i™ (iSeries™, AS/400™) systems.

Halcyon’s Disk Space Manager 4.0 is available as stand-alone software tool and provides comprehensive analysis of all System i™ (iSeries™, AS/400™) disk resources, including the integrated file system (IFS). It is also contained as a module within Halcyon’s Operations Center - a complete package of systems management tools designed to monitor and automatically manage all aspects of IBM System i™ (iSeries™, AS/400™) systems.

New graphical user interface (GUI) – “Disk Explorer”
The new GUI makes the process of disk space management easier to control using a simple drag-and-drop interface.

Halcyon Disk Explorer is included as a PC module that connects to the System i™ (iSeries™, AS/400™) devices and provides a visual representation of the disk information held across the enterprise. The user can drill down into each device and view ASP Groups, application, document and object information either individually or as grouped items. The software is highly configurable so that views can be customized. Changes in library size and space allocations can be easily identified and sorted to give a clear view of disk status.

Independent auxiliary storage pool (iASP) enhancements
The new software also allows the management of independent auxiliary storage pools (iASPs).

The main business benefits include:
• Significant cost savings by avoiding unnecessary disk upgrades by regular “housekeeping” of disk space usage
• Improved system performance by increasing available disk space
• Radical reduction in time needed to manage disk space as this can be done automatically and on a regular basis
• Quick identification of objects that are taking the largest amount of disk space
• Prevention of critical storage conditions being encountered by having early warning of increased disk usage
• Analysis of trends from historical data means IT Managers or operators can predict when disk capacity will become a problem.
